Dr Fumihiro Asano is the Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine of Gifu Prefectural General Medical Center. He has proposed virtual bronchoscopic navigation (VBN) that is a method to guide an ultrathin bronchoscope on the bronchial route to a peripheral pulmonary lesion using VB images in 1999 and received the most prestigious award of the Japan Society for Respiratory Endoscopy, Ikeda Award, named after Professor Sigeto Ikeda who developed the flexible bronchoscope, in 2003 for this accomplishment. He subsequently contributed to the development and spread of the VBN system and his achievements have been reported in many well-known journals such as AJRCCM, Thorax. At the same time, he is well-versed in radial EBUS, CT-guided bronchoscopy, and EMN, being one of the world's leading authorities on bronchoscopic diagnosis of pulmonary peripheral lesions.

He has been a regent of the World Association for Bronchology (WAB) for 6 years and now he is a regent of the World Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (WABIP). In addition, he has been a treasurer of the Asian Pacific Association on Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (APCB), deputy-chair of the Bronchoscopy and Interventional Techniques Assembly of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR), and editor of Respirology, contributing to the spread of respiratory endoscopic treatment to other countries for many years.
